WATCH: “I Funded Yo Maps’ First Professional Video, He Wanted Me to Sign Him, & DJ Kandeke Wasn’t a Radio DJ” – Drimz

Drimz Opens Up About Mentoring Yo Maps: “I Funded His First Video & Helped Shape His Early Career”

Zambian music icon Drimz has for the first time revealed his pivotal role in the early career of chart-topping artist Yo Maps. Speaking on The Table Show, Drimz shared insights into the mentorship and support he offered when Yo Maps was still an aspiring musician.

Drimz recounted meeting Yo Maps in 2011, when the singer was in Grade 11, and immediately recognizing his talent. “I took him in, gave him exposure, and introduced him to my network,” Drimz said, highlighting that much of Yo Maps’ early growth was made possible through the opportunities and connections he provided.

He also disclosed that he contributed directly to Yo Maps’ career by featuring on three of his early songs and funding collaborations with established artists such as Drifta Trek, Afunika, Jae Cash, Macky2, and Mampi. Notably, Drimz financed Yo Maps’ first professional music video, which featured Jae Cash.

Despite Yo Maps wanting to sign under him, Drimz declined, believing that the young artist would thrive more freely without being limited by formal management. “I didn’t want him to be limited; I was there to help him grow his brand,” he explained.

Drimz’s candid revelations shed light on the unseen efforts and sacrifices involved in nurturing emerging talent, highlighting the critical but often overlooked role mentors play in shaping the next generation of Zambian artists.
