Davido Declares Shift in Focus: “I’m No Longer Chasing Grammys or Western Validation”
Nigerian music superstar David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has opened up about his evolving mindset and the direction of his career, signaling a bold and intentional return to his African roots.
In a recent appearance on the Official UK Afrobeats Chart Show with Eddie Kadi, the award-winning singer reflected on his journey in the global music industry, highlighting the milestones he has achieved over the years. From selling out major arenas worldwide to earning multiple Grammy nominations across the past three years, Davido made it clear that he feels fulfilled by his accomplishments.
According to the artist, his priorities are now shifting. Rather than creating music tailored to Western audiences, he is focused on embracing a more authentic sound that represents his identity and heritage.
“This stage of my career is different,” Davido explained. “I’ve performed everywhere, sold out arenas, and attended the Grammys three times in the last three years. The music I’m working on now is purely Davido—it’s deeply African. I’m no longer trying to make Western-influenced music.”
This declaration marks a significant moment not only for Davido but also for the broader Afrobeats movement, which has steadily gained international recognition while maintaining its cultural roots.
Davido also took time to acknowledge the immense support he continues to receive from fans across Africa, particularly in South Africa. He confidently noted that a large percentage of South Africans are familiar with his music and have shown him consistent love throughout his career.
Over the years, the singer has built strong ties within the South African music scene, collaborating with several artists and earning multiple industry certifications in the country.
As Davido steps into this new phase, fans can expect music that is unapologetically African—authentic, bold, and reflective of the sound that first propelled him
to global fame.
