“Zambian Music Still Needs You”: Macky2 Urges Slapdee to Stay Active

Zambian hip-hop legend Macky2 has opened up about the evolution of the local music scene and expressed deep respect for fellow pioneer Slapdee. Reflecting on the early days of Zambian hip-hop, Macky2 recalls 2010 – a time when the scene was raw, competitive, and filled with young artists hungry to make their mark.

He fondly remembers the battles, the music, the crowds, and the energy that helped lay the foundations of Zambian hip-hop. While rivalries were intense back then, Macky2 stresses that these tensions eventually gave way to respect and brotherhood, highlighting the growth and enduring legacy of the pioneers.

Macky2’s message isn’t about glorifying the past – it’s about acknowledging the present. He reminds veteran artists that the culture they built comes with responsibility. While today’s industry may look different and the new generation may not fully grasp the paths paved by the OGs, the influence of these pioneers remains essential to keeping Zambian hip-hop alive.

“Zambian music still needs you. Not the ‘young and hungry’ you… the YOU who’s lived it. The one who understands that this culture isn’t just music… it’s responsibility,” Macky2 stated.

He urges veteran artists to remain visible, mentor the next generation, create new music, and reignite the passion that once fueled the culture. Movements thrive when pioneers actively participate, ensuring their influence continues to inspire artists across Lusaka, the Copperbelt, and beyond.

Macky2 concluded with a heartfelt tribute to Slapdee, recognizing the legendary rapper’s contributions and encouraging all OGs to lead by example – not for fame, but because “We Built This.”

The message is clear: respect, duty, and legacy are the pillars of Zambian hip-hop, with the pioneers continuing to guide the culture forward.
